S.T.E.M

S.T.E.M or Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths underpins how we support our learners from the vocabulary we use to the complex learning opportunities we offer here.

STEM starts from the baby room where babies explore speed and velocity using ramps to our 3-5 room the children are supported to become engineers, planning and constructing structure using block play.

Through STEM we have been able to gain our Gender Friendly Nursery Accreditation by looking at gender imbalances in the workforce. STEM also supports us in delivering our digital curriculum.

In 2018 we were fortunate enough to be the first Early Years to win an Education Scotland award for STEM.

At Shaw Mhor we have a passion for our 'STEM Challenges' which vary every term and challenge staff and children. In March 2024, the children in the 3-5 rooms were challenged to create a weather channel to showcase all of the learning that had been taking place over the term. The children developed an interest in the role of a weather forecaster and we were lucky enough to welcome Sean Batty into our nursery to showcase all of our weather channel videos and to hear more about the ins and outs of his job.

Since then we have created our own games and marketed them, created our own digital stories, held a Trashion Show and created story gardens in the outdoor environment.
